A porch (from the Catalan word porxo) is a structure attached to a building, forming a covered entrance to a vestibule or doorway. It is external to the walls of the main building proper, but may be enclosed by screen, latticework, broad windows, or other light frame walls extending from the main structure.
There are various styles of porches, all of which depend on the architectural tradition of its location. All porches will allow for sufficient space for a person to comfortably pause before entering or after exiting the building. However, they may be larger. Verandahs, for example, are usually quite large and may encompass the entire facade as well as the sides of a structure. At the other extreme, the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan has the longest porch in the world at 660 feet (200 m) in length

101 Things I Didn’t Learn in Architecture School

3] Do not drink at work and especially do not get toasted around your colleagues under any circumstances.
4] No matter how highly you may think of yourself you may still be a minion in the eyes of others who hold more power than you.
5] Once you leave architecture school not everybody cares about architecture or wants to talk about it.
6] All eating habits and diets acquired during school should be jettisoned.
7] The hygiene habits you kept in architecture school are inappropriate for real life; bathe regularly and change your underwear.
8] The rush and exhilaration you experience in studio may be inversely proportional to how much you will enjoy working for a firm.
9] It’s architecture, not medicine. You can take a break and no one will die.
10] Significant others are more important than architecture; they are the ones who will pull you through in the end. See 49.

الگوهاي معماري اسلامي
با تصويب مجلس؛
كارگروهي براي ترويج الگوهاي معماري و شهرسازي اسلامي - ايراني تشكيل شد
نمايندگان مجلس شوراي اسلامي در ادامه بررسي جزييات لايحه برنامه پنجم مصوب كردند كه كارگروهي براي انجام پژوهش‌هاي كاربردي، سياست‌گذاري، تدوين ضوابط و مقررات ترويج الگوهاي معماري و شهرسازي اسلامي - ايراني تشكيل شود.
مجلس شوراي اسلامي در جلسه علني صبح امروز ماده 151 مربوط به بخش مسكن فصل اقتصادي را تصويب كردند كه بر اساس آن شوراي عالي شهرسازي و معماري موظف است به منظور تدوين و ترويج الگوهاي معماري و شهرسازي اسلامي - ايراني با تشكيل كارگروهي مركب از نمايندگان دستگاه‌هاي ذيربط و صاحب‌نظران و متخصصان رشته‌هاي معماري، شهرسازي و حوزوي نسبت به انجام پژوهش‌هاي كاربردي، سياست‌گذاري، تدوين ضوابط و مقررات و ترويج الگوهاي مورد نظر اقدام نمايد.
بر اساس اين مصوبه بايستي ضوابط و تهيه طرح‌هاي مناسب‌سازي ساختمان‌ها و فضاهاي شهري و روستايي براي معلولين جسمي - حركتي بررسي و تدوين گردد. هم‌چنين شهرداري‌ها و دهياري‌ها موظف شده‌اند بر اساس ضوابط و طرح‌هاي اين موضوع نسبت به مناسب‌سازي معابر و فضاهاي عمومي شهري و روستايي اقدام نمايد.
هم‌چنين در اين مصوبه مقرر شده است كه مصوبات شوراي فوق براي كليه دستگاه‌هاي اجرايي، شوراهاي اسلامي شهر و روستا و كليه مالكان و سازندگان لازم‌الاجرا است.
بر اساس بند ديگري از اين مصوبه وزارت علوم، تحقيقات و فناوري و ساير دستگاه‌هاي آموزشي بر اساس توصيه‌هاي شوراي عالي شهرسازي و معماري نسبت به بازنگري سرفصل‌ها و محتواي دروس مربوطه اقدام نمايند

هم‌چنين در اين مصوبه مقرر شده است كه مصوبات شوراي فوق براي كليه دستگاه‌هاي اجرايي، شوراهاي اسلامي شهر و روستا و كليه مالكان و سازندگان لازم‌الاجرا است.
بر اساس بند ديگري از اين مصوبه وزارت علوم، تحقيقات و فناوري و ساير دستگاه‌هاي آموزشي بر اساس توصيه‌هاي شوراي عالي شهرسازي و معماري نسبت به بازنگري سرفصل‌ها و محتواي دروس مربوطه اقدام نمايند

اگر امپرسیونیست ها دندانپزشک بودند
تئوی عزیز
راستی، زندگی هیچوقت نمی‌خواهد با من درست تا کند؟ نومیدی مرا از پا درآورده! سرم دنگ دنگ صدا می‌کند! خانم سل شوویمر از من ادعای خسارت کرده است؛ چون که روکش دندان‌هایش را آن طور که دلم می‌خواست ساختم، نه آنطوری که به دهان مضحکش بخورد! درست است! من نمی‌توانم مثل یک کاسبکار معمولی طبق سفارش کار کنم! من به این نتیجه رسیدم که روکش دندان‌های او باید بزرگ و موج‌دار باشد؛ دندان‌هایی نامنظم و درهم برهم که مثل زبانه‌های آتش از هر طرف بیرون زده‌اند! حالا طرف دلخور است، چون توی دهانش جفت و جور نمی‌شود. او خیلی بورژوا و ابله است و دلم می خواهد خرد و خمیرش کنم! سعی کردم دندان عاریه‌اش را به زور توی دهانش بچپانم. اما مثل چلچراغ صد شعله بیرون می‌زند. با این همه به نظر من زیباست. او ادعا می‌کند که نمی‌تواند چیزی بجود! به من چه که او می‌تواند بجود یا نمی‌تواند! تئو، من دیگر نمی‌توانم مدت زیادی با این وضع ادامه دهم! از سزان پرسیدم که حاضر است با هم شریکی یک کارگاه بگیریم؟ اما او پیر و سست است و نمی‌تواند ابزارش را در دست نگه دارد و باید ابزار را به مچش بست، که با این وضعیت دقتش را از دست می‌دهد. وقتی هم که دستش توی دهان مریض می‌رود، بیشتر دندان‌ها را می‌شکند تا آن که درست‌شان کند. چه می‌شود کرد؟

دهمین دوره جایزه معمار در دو موضوع ساختمان‌های مسکونی و غیر مسکونی، و با حمایت مالی شرکت سوپرپایپ اینترناشنال و همکاری جامعه مهندسان معمار، در مهرماه سال جاری برگزار شد.
تاریخ تحویل پروژه‌ها 20 مهر بود که در آن زمان 94 پروژه مسکونی و 49 پروژه غیرمسکونی دریافت شد.
داوران این دوره 5 معمار ایرانی مقیم خارج از کشور بودند:
- آقای هادی تهرانی، موسس شرکت BRT در هامبورگ
- آقای نادر تهرانی، مدیر دفتر معماری Office dA در بوستون و رئیس بخش معماری دانشگاه MIT
- خانم‌ها گیسو و مژگان حریری، موسسین شرکت معماری حریری و حریری در نیویورک
- خانم نسرین سراجی، رئیس مدرسه عالی معماری پاریس و رئیس بخش هنر و معماری انستیتوی هنرهای زیبای وین
داوران طی دو روز برندگان اول تا سوم، فینالیست‌ها و پروژه‌های تقدیر ویژه در هر گروه را به شرح زیر برگزیدند:
